Kent Police are facing mounting scrutiny after a major blockade of the A20 in Dover by hundreds of masked demonstrators resulted in no arrests.
The protest, which took place on Saturday 5 September 2026, saw hundreds of people dressed in black and wearing balaclavas bring the UK’s busiest ferry port to a standstill. The group, which occupied the main arterial route into the town, caused four miles of traffic congestion and delays of up to 45 minutes for ferry passengers.
The force described the gathering as “spontaneous,” but this characterisation is being challenged by local officials.
Political and local backlash
Criticism also came from within the local authority. Councillor Chris Vinson, leader of the Conservative group on Dover District Council, described the police presence during the height of the disruption as “extremely low.” He noted that officers appeared to have been caught off guard by the scale and suddenness of the blockade.
In a report by ITV News, it was noted that while the A20 and port access roads were confirmed as “free flowing” by midday on Saturday, the lack of immediate police intervention has raised concerns about the protection of the UK’s border points.
‘Patriot Platform’ claims responsibility
Daniel Thomas, a long-term associate of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (known as Tommy Robinson), has claimed responsibility for the blockade through a group called ‘Patriot Platform’. Writing on social media, Thomas—often referred to as ‘Danny Tommo’—framed the disruption as a “warning” regarding illegal migration.
Mr Yaxley-Lennon also amplified the event, reposting footage of the masked demonstrators and encouraging followers to support the movement.
Despite the scale of the disruption, Kent Police confirmed on 6 September that no one was detained or charged during the operation.
Travel recovery
Ferry operators have spent the weekend managing the fallout from the delays.
While traffic has returned to normal, the Patriot Platform has indicated that further actions may be planned, leading to calls for a more robust policing strategy for the Kent coast.
