A landmark documentary revealing the hidden biodiversity of the North Sea is set to arrive in UK cinemas this month, documenting the return of “giants” like the Atlantic bluefin tuna to British waters.
The film, titled North Sea – Nature Untamed, is scheduled for general release on 25 September 2026. It follows more than 20 years of work by cinematographer and diver Peter van Rodijnen, who sought to challenge the perception of the North Sea as a “murky bowl of soup” by capturing its complex ecosystem and vibrant marine life.
Directed by Mark Verkerk and produced by Dutch Maritime Productions and EMS Films, the project has already seen significant success in the Netherlands, where it was awarded the ‘Golden Film’ status after drawing more than 150,000 viewers.
The Return of the Giants
A central focus of the documentary is the reappearance of the Atlantic bluefin tuna. These apex predators, which can reach up to three metres in length, were absent from UK waters for over 60 years. While the film focuses on the North Sea, the return of the species is a phenomenon felt across the South Coast.
In recent years, bluefin tuna have been frequently sighted in the English Channel and off the coast of Sussex. Their return is often cited by marine biologists as a sign of shifting ecological conditions and successful conservation measures, though the documentary also explores the ongoing pressures from industrial activity and climate change.
In addition to tuna, the film features rare footage of various shark species, which Van Rodijnen describes as his “film stars.” The production aimed to show that the waters surrounding the British Isles contain beauty and drama comparable to tropical reefs.
Where to Watch: UK Release Dates and Previews
Distributor Dartmouth Films has confirmed that special preview screenings will take place on Saturday, 19 September 2026. For residents on the South Coast, the nearest major preview event is scheduled at ODEON Bournemouth. Other preview locations include London and Cardiff.
The full theatrical rollout will begin on Friday, 25 September 2026. While the local Bognor Regis Picturedrome has not yet confirmed a screening, the film is expected to be available at major regional hubs.
The production of North Sea – Nature Untamed represents a significant technical achievement, as Van Rodijnen had to contend with low visibility, strong currents, and the logistical challenges of filming in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. According to DIVE Magazine, the project captures everything from the tiny world of plankton to the predatory behaviour of the sea’s largest inhabitants.
The film arrives just weeks after reports in August 2026 confirmed that the first bluefin tuna had been legally caught and landed in the North Sea for the first time in nearly 90 years, further highlighting the timing of the documentary’s UK release.
