Bereaved military families across Great Britain will be eligible for free rail travel to attend Remembrance events this year, marking a formal expansion of the national scheme to include those who have lost loved ones in service.
For the first time, one designated next of kin of a service person who died while serving in the Armed Forces will be able to travel at no cost on National Rail services during Remembrance weekend. The offer is valid for travel on Saturday 7 November and Sunday 8 November 2026.
The initiative is a joint effort between the Ministry of Defence, the Department for Transport, and the Rail Delivery Group. It sits alongside existing arrangements that already provide free travel to serving personnel and veterans attending Remembrance services, including the national service at the Cenotaph in London.
Application process and deadlines
Eligible family members cannot claim the free travel at station ticket offices or on the day of travel. Instead, applications must be processed through the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) to ensure the tickets are issued in time for the weekend’s events.
A strict deadline of 16 October 2026 has been set for all applications. Readers seeking to use the scheme are advised to apply as early as possible to allow for processing and the dispatch of physical or digital tickets.

Future of the scheme
Veterans Minister Calvin Bailey has confirmed that the scheme is fully funded and is intended to become a permanent annual fixture, rather than a one-off provision for 2026.
The Ministry of Defence noted that this move formally recognises the sacrifice of bereaved families, who were previously not part of the standard free travel offer provided to the wider military community during the Remembrance period.
While the new provision is specifically for one designated next of kin, veterans and serving members of the Armed Forces should continue to follow their usual channels for Remembrance travel, as their existing eligibility remains unchanged.
