The arrest of five men near RAF Fairford has sparked a diplomatic dispute after Donald Trump claimed the group had been under long-term joint surveillance by US and British authorities.
The suspects, five British men, were detained on Sunday 27 September 2026. They were arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act after being intercepted near the Gloucestershire airbase.
While UK officials have attributed the arrests to a spontaneous tip-off from a local farmer, Mr Trump suggested the operation was the result of a pre-planned intelligence mission. Speaking after the incident, he claimed the suspects had been “under investigation” by both US and UK authorities for a “long time” and were looking to do “big damage”.
Conflicting accounts
The former president’s comments have created a significant discrepancy with the official UK narrative. According to Counter Terrorism Policing, the intervention was triggered at 12:45 am on Sunday when a member of the public reported suspicious vehicles near the base.
Police intercepted three white vans and established a 400-metre security cordon. The incident led to the evacuation of 85 homes in the nearby village of Whelford, with residents moved to a local leisure centre while army bomb disposal experts examined the vehicles.
Investigation continues
The group, which has been dubbed the “Fairford Five” by some commentators—recycling a moniker used for anti-war protesters at the same base in 2003—were released on bail on Monday 28 September 2026.
The 400-metre cordon around the site has since been lifted and residents of Whelford have been permitted to return to their homes. Security remains heightened at RAF Fairford as it continues to support international operations.
