Slinger Francisco, the legendary calypsonian known globally as the Mighty Sparrow, has died at the age of 91.
The “Calypso King of the World” passed away on Sunday, 27 September 2026, at a hospital in New York following a brief illness. His death was confirmed in a statement by his daughter, Karen Francisco, on behalf of the family.
Born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad, Francisco became the most prolific and decorated figure in the history of calypso music. His breakthrough came in 1956 with the hit “Jean and Dinah”, which earned him his first Calypso King title. Over a career spanning seven decades, he secured Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso Monarch title eight times and won the Road March competition on eight occasions.
His influence extended far beyond the Caribbean, particularly within the UK. In 2015, he was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to culture. His music frequently challenged social norms and political structures, leading to a 23-year ban by the BBC on his track “Congo Man”. Despite such controversies, he achieved mainstream UK success with the soulful ballad “Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart”.
The Trinidad Guardian reports that the singer had recently undergone a significant personal transition, having been baptised into the Seventh-day Adventist faith shortly before his passing.
