Avanti West Coast to move into public ownership on 7 March 2027

The government has confirmed that Avanti West Coast will be brought into public ownership on 7 March 2027. The announcement, made by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool on 27 September 2026, marks a definitive date for the nationalisation of one of the UK’s most prominent long-distance rail operators.

The move is part of a rolling programme under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024, which seeks to transfer rail contracts into state hands as they expire. Avanti West Coast, which operates services on the West Coast Main Line connecting London Euston with the Midlands, North West, and Scotland, has faced significant criticism in recent years over performance and reliability issues.

Investment in Euston and Infrastructure

Alongside the handover date, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced a multi-million-pound investment package aimed at improving passenger experience and infrastructure reliability. A total of £50 million has been allocated for upgrades at London Euston station, the London terminus for the West Coast Main Line.

To address the frequent delays caused by technical faults, a further £10 million will be spent on power and signalling maintenance across the wider West Coast Main Line. The government also plans to invest an additional £10 million across other stations on the route by the end of 2027, focusing on improving reliability for services heading to the North West and Manchester.

Heidi Alexander stated that the transition is intended to provide a “reset” for the line, with a renewed focus on punctuality and service delivery under the new public operator.

The Nationalisation Timeline

The transition of Avanti West Coast follows the successful transfer of Chiltern Railways into public ownership on 20 September 2026. The government’s schedule for rail reform will continue through the remainder of the year and into 2027.

Great Western Railway (GWR) is the next major operator scheduled for transfer, with its services set to move into public ownership on 13 December 2026. The DfT has indicated that it aims to complete the transfer of all major rail franchises by the end of 2027, as part of its strategy to create a more integrated national rail network.

For passengers currently using Avanti West Coast services, existing tickets and railcards remain valid. Handover on 7 March 2027 is expected to be a direct administrative transfer to the public operator, with no immediate changes to timetables planned for the day of the takeover. Future service adjustments are expected to focus on improving performance for long-distance routes to Scotland and the North West.
