The 17th series of The Great British Bake Off returned to screens on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, offering an unexpected reprieve for the new cohort of amateur bakers.
The premiere’s Signature challenge was based on a chocolate Guinness cake, a recipe famously associated with Nigella Lawson.
Star Baker and the Elimination Twist
Mo Mahirr was named the first Star Baker of the 2026 series. The 21-year-old law student secured the title after impressing the judges across the weekend’s opening challenges.
Despite the competitive start, the episode concluded without an elimination. Contestant Shannon Amy was forced to withdraw from the series early due to illness, leading producers to confirm that no other baker would be sent home in the opening week. The decision leaves 11 bakers heading into the second round of the competition.
Format Changes and ‘Second Helpings’
This series also introduces a change to the show’s spin-off format. The long-running companion programme ‘An Extra Slice’ has been replaced by a new show titled Second Helpings.
Hosted by comedians Jon Richardson and Judi Love, the new spin-off continues to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the tent and interviews with the participants, airing alongside the main competition.
The Great British Bake Off airs every Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4. The next episode, which will see the bakers tackle ‘Biscuit Week’, is scheduled for 29 September 2026. Catch-up for the premiere is currently available via the Channel 4 streaming service.
