The milestone comes amid a significant shift in the construction sector, with more women seeking careers in manual trades and DIY to challenge long-standing industry stereotypes.
National data from 2024 to 2026 indicates that while women now make up roughly 15.2% of the total UK construction workforce, a stark disparity remains in on-site roles. Only 2% of manual, on-site trade positions are currently held by women.
For many entering the profession, the motivation is as much about skill as it is about social change. Industry reports highlight a growing sentiment among new recruits who enjoy the practical nature of the work and the opportunity to “prove people wrong” in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
Training and local opportunities
The rise in interest is supported by a variety of national and regional training routes.
For residents in West Sussex, including those in the Bognor area, Chichester College Group serves as a primary provider for these trade qualifications. A Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing Studies (Course CCON025F) commenced at the college on 1 September 2026, aimed at introducing students to the fundamental requirements of the trade.
Beyond traditional diplomas, government-funded “Skills Bootcamps” are being used to fast-track career changes. These programmes offer free training in multi-trades, painting, and decorating for eligible residents. To qualify for these bootcamps through Chichester College Group, applicants must be aged 19 or over and live in West Sussex or Brighton & Hove.

Despite the overall increase in female participation in the wider construction workforce, the journey into specific skilled trades like plumbing and electrical work has seen some fluctuations.
