San Francisco-based developer Double Fine Productions has announced its first project as an independent studio since parting ways with Xbox earlier this summer. The new title, Thank You Bus Driver, is scheduled for release on 14 October 2026.
The game marks a significant milestone for the studio, which regained its independence from Xbox Game Studios on 6 July 2026. While Double Fine is once again self-governing, studio founder Tim Schafer confirmed that the transition required the redundancy of 23 staff members to ensure the company’s financial sustainability as an independent entity.
Double Fine has launched a dedicated section on its website to detail its return to independence and its future as a self-publishing developer.
A new experimental label
Thank You Bus Driver is being released under the “Double Fine Action Labs” label, a new initiative designed for smaller, experimental projects. According to reports from the development team, the game’s concept originated from a small group within the studio and was completed in just a few weeks.
The gameplay is described as a comedic simulation, often compared to a blend of the high-speed delivery of Crazy Taxi and the strict rule-following of Papers, Please. Players must navigate a bus through various scenarios while enforcing passenger rules, reportedly using a specific “slap” mechanic to maintain order on the vehicle.
This “scrappy” approach to development is intended to allow the studio to release more frequent, smaller-scale titles alongside its larger productions. Thank You Bus Driver will be the first test of this new publishing strategy.
Release details and platforms
At launch, the game will be available exclusively for PC. Players will be able to purchase the title through several digital storefronts, including Steam, GOG, and Itch.io. While there has been speculation regarding potential future ports for consoles such as the PlayStation or the successor to the Nintendo Switch, the studio has not yet confirmed any plans for platforms beyond the PC.
The 14 October release date places the launch just over three months after the studio’s exit from the Xbox ecosystem. For many industry observers, the speed of this release serves as a statement of intent for Double Fine’s new era as an independent outfit.
