Catherine Zeta-Jones has spoken out against the label “nepo baby,” describing the term used to categorise the children of celebrities as “horrific” and “horrible.”
In an interview with The Sunday Times published on 13 September 2026, the Oscar-winning actress defended the career choices and work ethic of her children, Dylan and Carys, whom she shares with her husband of 25 years, Michael Douglas.
The term “nepo baby”—shorthand for nepotism baby—has become a prominent cultural label in recent years, often used to dismiss the achievements of individuals with famous parents in the entertainment and fashion industries. Zeta-Jones, who rose from a working-class background in Swansea to Hollywood stardom, argued that the phrase unfairly undermines the effort put in by the next generation.
Zeta-Jones confirmed that her son Dylan, 26, is currently pursuing an acting career, while her daughter Carys, 23, has shown a keen interest in directing. The actress insisted that she and Michael Douglas are realistic about their children’s prospects and would not encourage them if they lacked the necessary skill.
“If they weren’t good, I’d be the first to say, ‘Go to law school,’” she remarked, indicating that talent remains the primary requirement for longevity in the industry. She noted that while a famous name might provide an initial introduction, it does not guarantee a sustained career or critical approval.
The debate carries a particular resonance for the family given that Michael Douglas is himself a “second-generation” star, being the son of the late Hollywood icon Kirk Douglas. Despite their high-profile lineage, Zeta-Jones suggested that the modern industry presents different pressures for young performers than it did for her husband’s generation.
Away from the family debate, Zeta-Jones remains highly active in her own professional life. She is currently starring as Jackie Price in the Prime Video drama Kill Jackie and is confirmed to return as Morticia Addams in the third season of the Netflix series Wednesday.
