Deteriorating 1952 war memorial in Rustington to be replaced with exact replica

Work has begun to replace the three-tonne war memorial in Rustington, with specialists arriving this week to dismantle the deteriorating Portland stone obelisk.

The project, which is scheduled to run from Monday 8 September until Thursday 11 September 2026, will see the original 1952 structure replaced by an exact replica to ensure the site remains safe and preserved for future generations.

The original three-tonne obelisk has suffered significant erosion from salt spray and coastal winds.

Situated at the corner of Claigmar Road and The Street, the memorial has suffered significant erosion due to its proximity to the coast. Technical assessments identified that the Portland stone had been compromised by coastal winds, salt water, and sand abrasion. This environmental exposure led to “pitting” and the failure of the stone’s surface-hardening, necessitating a full replacement of the pillar.

Historical Preservation

The memorial was originally designed by architect Brian Tyler and was unveiled on 2 July 1952. While the main three-tonne stone obelisk is being replaced, the village’s record of the fallen will remain undisturbed. The existing plaques listing those lost in both World Wars are attached to the surrounding boundary wall rather than the obelisk itself, and will be preserved in their current positions.

Rustington Parish Council commissioned the replica to ensure the replacement is indistinguishable from the original. The new structure is being carved from matching Portland stone to maintain the exact aesthetic and historical character intended by Tyler more than 70 years ago.

Project Information

The current phase of work is expected to be completed by the end of the day on 11 September. The timing of the replacement ensures the site will be fully restored well in advance of the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

Residents who require further information or have specific enquiries regarding the project can contact Rustington Parish Council directly on 01903 786420.
