An inventor from Angmering is launching a bespoke “floating pub” on the River Adur today to celebrate his father’s 60th birthday.
Will Bower created “The Float Inn” by mounting a repurposed garden shed onto a handmade pontoon. The vessel is scheduled to begin its trial voyage on Sunday 13 September 2026, navigating a stretch of the river between Upper Beeding and Shoreham.
The project was inspired by Mr Bower’s father’s interests in both watercraft and beer. The inventor plans to serve drinks as the craft moves along the river.
Navigating permissions
The launch on the Adur comes after Mr Bower faced significant hurdles in finding a location for the craft. Arun District Council previously rejected the proposal to launch the vessel within its jurisdiction, citing safety and environmental concerns.
The creator reportedly approached approximately 50 other venues and authorities, most of whom declined to host the floating structure. The choice of the River Adur was eventually finalised for today’s launch.
A history of inventions
Mr Bower, a resident of Angmering, has a history of producing unconventional builds. His previous projects have included a “bath car” and a well-publicised stint staying in a modified skip.
The Float Inn is designed specifically for the landmark family birthday and is not a commercial enterprise. While the specific timing of the launch has not been widely publicised to manage crowd levels, the unusual craft is expected to be a visible addition to the river landscape throughout the day.
