Resident Evil Requiem hits 8.5 million sales as Capcom price cuts outpace film impact

The latest instalment in the Resident Evil gaming franchise, Resident Evil Requiem, has officially reached an estimated 8.5 million copies sold as of late September 2026. While the series recently celebrated a record-breaking cinematic reboot, internal data suggest that Capcom‘s strategic price reductions have been the primary driver for the game’s commercial momentum.

The film, directed by Zach Cregger and co-produced by Sony’s PlayStation Productions, opened to a global box office of $108.3 million on 18 September 2026. Despite this being the largest opening in the history of Resident Evil film adaptations, its impact on game sales was partially eclipsed by a promotional campaign on digital storefronts that began eight days prior to the film’s premiere.

Pricing versus Hollywood hype

Industry analysis indicates that Capcom’s decision to implement deep discounts across the Resident Evil catalogue starting on 10 September was more effective at converting interest into revenue than the “halo effect” generated by the cinema release. In fact, on the PlayStation 5 platform, Requiem saw a 4% dip in daily revenue during the film’s opening weekend, largely due to the depth of the price cuts already in place.

However, the film—which departed from typical game-centric leads to follow ‘Bryan’ (played by Austin Abrams), a medical courier—did spark a significant resurgence in older titles. The Resident Evil 2 remake saw a 48% spike in daily active users in the week following the film’s debut, suggesting that the cinematic reboot successfully re-engaged players with the franchise’s back catalogue even if it did not provide an immediate sales surge for the newest title.

Platform performance and physical sales

The PlayStation 5 remains the dominant platform for Resident Evil Requiem, accounting for 48.1% of total sales. Despite the industry’s wider shift towards digital distribution, 30.8% of these PlayStation 5 users are still opting for physical copies of the game. PC remains a vital market for Capcom, with Steam sales making up 43.4% of the total, while the Xbox Series consoles account for the remaining 8.6%.

Capcom’s Q1 FY2026 financial results, released earlier this year, had already confirmed the game reached 8 million sales by July. The latest figures show a steady growth of 500,000 units over the summer months. PC gaming continues to be a core pillar of the company’s strategy, with the platform accounting for 60.4% of total company digital sales across all franchises.

With the Halloween season approaching, analysts expect further promotional activity. While the film has established a successful new foundation for the franchise on the big screen, it is the shop-floor strategy and digital discounts that continue to define Resident Evil’s financial trajectory in 2026.
