Japanese publisher Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold more than one million units within its first 24 hours of release. The figures, announced on 7 September 2026, mark a significant commercial comeback for a franchise that had not seen a mainline entry for two decades.
The game launched globally on 4 September 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. This initial sales surge has successfully pushed the cumulative sales for the Onimusha series past the 10 million mark since the original title debuted in 2001.

Franchise revival after 20-year hiatus
Way of the Sword is the first major instalment in the series since 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Developed using the RE Engine—the same technology behind recent Resident Evil and Street Fighter titles—the game is set in Edo-era Kyoto. In a nod to classic cinema, the protagonist Miyamoto Musashi is modelled after the late actor Toshiro Mifune.
According to an official statement from Capcom, the revival is part of a specific corporate strategy to “re-activate” dormant intellectual properties. The company indicated that the project was intended to maximise corporate value by leveraging its extensive catalogue of classic brands for modern hardware.
While specific data for the UK market has not yet been released, the game currently maintains a high profile on digital storefronts. For players wishing to test the title, a free demo is available to download on all platforms. The full game is priced at a standard rate of approximately £60 to £70 depending on the digital store and platform.
The success of the launch has led to industry speculation regarding the potential return of other long-dormant Capcom franchises, though the publisher has not yet confirmed plans for any further revivals following the Onimusha release.
