Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the development of Diablo 5, the next instalment in its long-running action role-playing franchise. Revealed during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony in Anaheim, California, the studio confirmed a targeted release window of Spring 2029.
The announcement marks a significant shift in direction for the series. While Diablo 4 introduced a static, “shared world” overworld with heavy MMO (massively multiplayer online) influences, the sequel will return to the franchise’s roots with a fully procedurally generated overworld and dungeons. This change ensures that the map layout and environment will vary for every player and playthrough, moving away from the fixed geography of the current title.
Despite the return to random generation, Game Director Joe Shely confirmed that Diablo 5 will continue to support both solo and multiplayer gameplay.
A new setting and classes
Diablo 5 is set approximately 100 years after the events of Diablo 4, depicted as a “post-apocalyptic” era for the world of Sanctuary. In a departure from the traditional fixed towns and hubs, the sequel will introduce a “caravan” system, where the player’s base of operations moves with them through the changing landscape.
The studio confirmed three of the initial character classes available at launch:
- Demon Hunter: A returning favourite focused on ranged combat and traps.
- Monk: A high-mobility martial arts specialist.
- Plague Knight: A new addition to the series lore, expected to utilise blight and necrotic abilities.
The future of Diablo 4
The announcement of a sequel has brought clarity—and some controversy—to the roadmap for Diablo 4. Blizzard confirmed that the game will receive no further expansions. This marks a change in strategy from previous executive statements which suggested a cycle of annual expansions for the title.
Despite the pivot toward Diablo 5, immediate support for the current game continues.
Practical details regarding Diablo 5 remain sparse. Blizzard has not yet confirmed specific platform availability beyond PC, nor has it addressed whether players will be able to migrate characters or cosmetic items from the current game to the sequel. More information is expected as development progresses toward the 2029 launch window.
