Hot work! Runners bid to beat the heat in sun-kissed Bognor 10K event

Tone Zone 10k

The majority of runners at the 23rd Bognor 10k enjoyed a sunny outlook when they crossed the finish line yesterday. That was because it was a relief to many to finish due to the energy-sapping heat. And it was a sun-kissed James Westlake, from Crawley AC, who came in first with a time of 31m 47s.

Matt Bradford, representing Lewes A came second finishing around 40 seconds later with Chichester Runners’ James Baker, in 33m 05s, finishing third out of almost 1,600 runners.

Horsham Blue Star Johanna Spannagl was the winner of the women’s race finishing in 38m 50s, with Cheltenham Harriers’ Shona Crombie-Hicks coming home second some 40 seconds later. And Lucy Thraves, representing Chichester Runners, was third in 41m.

Tone Zone Youngsters

Among the competitors were 76 from Bognor Tone Zone Runners, including the younger element of the club pictured above, (L-R Jack Penfold, Ben Hardcastle, Lucy Budge, Nathan Bilham). The club also organised the event alongside the Bognor Rotary Club. Simon Gill was the first club runner to get back to West Park, finishing in an excellent sixth overall in 33m 41s.

Kari Mack won her over-40 age category, and said: “I am so pleased with 41m 26s, fourth lady overall and first over 40! It was so great to see all the Tone Zone gang and such a great turn out on a beautiful, if a bit too hot, day. Very well done everyone.”

One runner who really got into the beat of the race was Luke Simmonds, who said: “I am pretty pleased with my Bognor 10k time of 43m 48s, definitely not on form, as I had to work rather hard for it… average heart rate was 186bpm, with a max of 196! I think people could’ve heard me huffing if they stood at the finish line, when I was at mile four!”

Five of our club runners achieved PBs despite the heat; these were Colin Hiscock by over two minutes with 39m 40s, Juliet Stallard 43m 25s, Jess Thomson 44m 21s, Claire Baker 54m and David Sinclair 54m.

Among the new competitors entering their first race from being non-runners in January were husband and wife duo of Darren and Bella Cobby, who exceeded their own expectations by completing the course in 53m 51s and 1h 03m 02s. Other first time runners were Ian Buchan, Zoe Hemes, Janice James and Angela Money.
