Avanti West Coast to be nationalised on 7 March 2027

Avanti West Coast is to be brought into public ownership on 7 March 2027, the government has confirmed. The move marks a significant acceleration in the plan to nationalise the United Kingdom’s rail network, with the operator’s current contract being terminated years ahead of schedule.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced the decision on 27 September 2026, stating the government would exercise a termination right in the contract with First Trenitalia. The agreement had originally been set to run until 2032, but ministers have moved early to take control of the West Coast Main Line, which connects London Euston with the Midlands, North West, and Scotland.

The takeover is part of a broader strategy under the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act. The government intends to have all 14 major passenger rail operators in public ownership by the end of 2027, with services eventually unified under the “Great British Railways” (GBR) brand.

Performance and Investment

The decision follows a period of sustained criticism regarding Avanti’s service levels. Official figures recently recorded the operator’s cancellation rate at 7.1%, which is double the national average. The government has stated the transition is intended “to build a railway that actually works for people.”

Alongside the nationalisation, a £70 million investment package has been unveiled to address infrastructure and station quality. This includes:

  • £50 million for London Euston: A major refurbishment of the terminus, including £11 million specifically allocated for new seating and improved waiting areas.
  • £10 million for infrastructure: Dedicated funding for power and signalling maintenance on the West Coast Main Line to reduce technical delays.
  • £10 million for station upgrades: General improvements across the wider network served by the operator.

In a statement about the transfer, the operator noted that the transition would involve moving services to a new public sector body. The government has promised immediate priorities for the new state-run service will include enhancing overall timetable reliability.

What passengers need to know

For those travelling on the West Coast Main Line, the government has confirmed that there will be no immediate change to day-to-day operations during the transition period. Passengers do not need to take any action regarding their travel plans.

Existing tickets and bookings remain valid, and railcards will continue to be accepted as normal. The transition on 7 March 2027 is expected to be administrative, with staff transferring to the new public ownership body under existing employment terms.

Avanti West Coast follows other major operators into state control, including South Western Railway and Govia Thameslink Railway (Southern), the latter of which was nationalised in May 2026. By the end of 2027, the Department for Transport expects the entire franchised network to be under public management.
