Microsoft refuses to rule out removal of day-one releases from Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft has declined to explicitly deny reports that its flagship Xbox Game Pass service could undergo a significant restructuring in 2027, potentially ending the inclusion of new “day-one” releases for future titles.

The technology giant issued a statement on 15 September 2026 following widespread speculation regarding the future of the subscription model. While the company stated it had “no changes to announce today,” its refusal to rule out a long-term overhaul has intensified discussions within the gaming industry.

The rumours, which originated from reported leaks within the gaming community, suggest that Microsoft is preparing to move away from its established strategy of launching all first-party titles on Game Pass the same day they go on sale. This shift is reportedly slated for the window between February and April 2027.

The “Previously Announced” Distinction

In its response to the reports, Microsoft’s wording has been noted for its specificity. The company confirmed that “previously announced” day-one games remain unchanged. This distinction appears to protect high-profile titles already in the public eye, such as Fable, which is currently scheduled for release in February 2027.

However, the statement notably avoids making similar commitments to games that have not yet been officially revealed. This “non-denial” has led analysts to suggest that while current promises will be kept, the era of guaranteed day-one access for every Microsoft-published title may be drawing to a close.

Under the leadership of Asha Sharma, who currently heads Microsoft’s gaming division, the service has already seen price fluctuations. Following a spike in 2025, the current price for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in the UK stands at £16.99 per month.

Reported Tier Changes and Cloud Restrictions

Beyond the removal of day-one titles, the leaked plans detail a potential shift in how features are bundled. One of the most significant reported claims involves the separation of cloud gaming from the standard tiers.

According to the reports, cloud streaming could be moved to a standalone add-on costing approximately $5.99 (roughly £4.50 to £5.00). This add-on would reportedly carry a restrictive 25-hour monthly playtime limit, a move that would represent a significant reduction in value for users who currently enjoy unlimited streaming as part of their Ultimate subscription.

Writing for Forbes, industry analyst Paul Tassi noted that the exclusion of certain major titles, such as previous Call of Duty releases, may have already set a precedent for this type of tier-based restriction.

Impact on Subscribers

If the proposed 2027 window is accurate, it remains unclear how existing long-term subscriptions would be affected or if current members would be “grandfathered” into the old model.

For now, the 25-hour cap on cloud gaming remains a reported claim rather than official policy. Microsoft has not provided details on whether users would be able to purchase additional hours or how the limit would be monitored across different devices.

While the total removal of day-one titles is viewed by some analysts as unlikely given the service’s current marketing, the tactical silence from Microsoft regarding unannounced 2027 titles suggests that the “all-in” era of Game Pass may be entering a more restrictive phase.
