UK health officials have confirmed the autumn schedule for national mortality monitoring as the country enters a standard surveillance period following a summer of significant excess deaths.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is set to release its findings for the week ending 11 October 2026 on Thursday, 15 October. A further report covering the week ending 18 October is provisionally scheduled for release at 2:00 PM on 22 October.

This monitoring is a routine part of public health surveillance, designed to detect “mortality signals”—instances where the number of deaths from all causes exceeds the range typically expected for the time of year. By tracking all-cause mortality, health officials can identify emerging threats such as extreme weather events, flu outbreaks, or other public health emergencies.

Summer heatwave context

The upcoming data follows a summer period that saw a marked impact on national health statistics. UKHSA estimates indicate that approximately 2,877 deaths were linked to record-breaking heatwaves across England and Wales between May and August 2026.

Despite those extremes, the most recent verified surveillance figures suggest that mortality levels have stabilised. Data for the week ending 16 August 2026 confirmed that national mortality had returned to levels within the expected threshold for that time of year.

To ensure accuracy, UKHSA uses the EuroMOMO algorithm, a European mortality monitoring tool that compares current death registrations against a historical baseline. A “high mortality signal” is officially recorded only if the number of registered deaths exceeds a specific statistical threshold known as a 2 z-score.

The surveillance relies on data provided by the General Register Office (GRO), which records all deaths registered in England and Wales. While the reports provide a high-level national summary, they are a critical tool for the government to assess the impact of seasonal changes and environmental factors on the population.
