Stephanie Cole, the celebrated actress who became a household name through her roles in Tenko, Waiting for God, and Coronation Street, has died at the age of 84.
Her agent, John Grant, confirmed her passing on the morning of Friday, 18 September 2026, in a statement released on behalf of her family. It was disclosed that the actress had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years prior to her death.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Cole was renowned for her versatility and her ability to portray formidable, often acerbic characters. One of her most enduring roles was as Dr Beatrice Mason in the 1980s prisoner-of-war drama Tenko, a performance that cemented her place in British television history.
She also found great success in comedy, notably as the cynical Diana Trent in the sitcom Waiting for God. In a testament to her acting range, Cole was frequently cast in roles much older than her actual age; she was only in her late 40s when she began playing the retiree Diana.
In later years, she reached a new generation of viewers as Sylvia Goodwin, the sharp-tongued mother of Roy Cropper in Coronation Street. Her stint on the cobbles was highly acclaimed, leading to a British Soap Award for Best Comedy Performance in 2012.
