Rising costs drive 40% of gamers to cancel Xbox and PlayStation subscriptions

Data released regarding gaming subscription services including Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online has highlighted the current subscription market for users. New research suggests that while many users still value the services, players are making choices about their gaming budgets.

Data released on 11 September 2026 by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella highlights a trend of “subscription fatigue” across the UK and international markets. The findings indicate that the decision to cancel is often not a reflection of the quality of the games library, but rather a decision made as subscribers review their options.

UK gaming costs on the rise

The research comes at a time when the price of digital gaming in the UK has reached new highs. As of September 2026, a monthly subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs £16.99. While the service provides access to hundreds of titles and day-one releases, the annual cost now exceeds £200 for those paying month-to-month.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus service also carries significant annual costs following previous tier restructures. In the UK, the Essential plan is priced at £59.99 per year, while the Extra and Premium tiers—which offer larger game catalogues and cloud streaming—cost £99.99 and £119.99 respectively.

The financial pressure on gamers is not limited to software. On 1 September 2026, the price of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware in the UK increased to £419.99. These hardware price hikes, combined with service fees, have made maintaining a multi-platform gaming setup increasingly expensive.

Subscriber considerations

For many UK households, gaming subscriptions are now viewed as flexible expenses. Unlike “must-have” utilities, the non-essential nature of gaming catalogues makes them a target for review during the year.

Industry analysts suggest that the challenge for Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo will be proving long-term value to retain members who genuinely like the services. With the busy Christmas release window approaching, many players may find themselves choosing between a single blockbuster purchase or maintaining a library subscription they use less frequently.
