Residents in Whitehawk have raised formal objections against a licensing application for a local social club, citing concerns that a new alcohol permit could lead to a rise in crime and anti-social behaviour.
The application for the Valley Social Club, located at 122 Whitehawk Way, Brighton, seeks a premises licence to sell alcohol from 10:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday, and from 12:00 to 22:30 on Sundays.
Six neighbours have submitted formal representations to Brighton & Hove City Council, expressing fears that the move would exacerbate existing issues with public nuisance and disorder in the surrounding residential area.
Police Recommendations
Sussex Police has not issued a formal objection to the proposal. However, the force has recommended that 12 specific conditions be attached to the licence if it is granted. These conditions are intended to mitigate potential risks to public safety and order, ensuring the premises operates within the requirements of the Licensing Act 2003.
The council’s licensing panel is required to consider how the application aligns with four core objectives: the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance, and the protection of children from harm.

The application is scheduled to be decided during a licensing panel hearing on 21 September 2026. This will allow councillors to weigh the club’s request against the evidence provided by residents and authorities.
