A new six-part dramedy exploring the awkward reality of the UK’s housing crisis and the end of a relationship is set to arrive on Channel 4 this autumn. Break Clause follows Ben and Lil, a couple who decide to split up but find themselves legally bound to share a flat for six months due to a tenancy agreement.
The series will premiere on Channel 4 on Thursday 1 October 2026 at 10pm. For those who prefer to binge-watch, the broadcaster has confirmed that all six episodes will be released as a box set on its streaming service the same day.
Samuel Bottomley and Lara Ricote star as the central couple, Ben and Lil. Their predicament is one many modern renters may find uncomfortably familiar: despite their relationship reaching its end, a rigid tenancy agreement forces them to continue cohabitating in a cramped city apartment. The show tracks their forced domesticity over several months, charting the emotional and practical hurdles of moving on while still sharing a fridge.
From Comedy Blaps to the screen
Written and created by Jess Bray (The Outlaws) and directed by Alice Snedden (Starstruck), Break Clause originated from Channel 4’s ‘Comedy Blaps’ pilot strand in 2024. The production is a collaboration between BBC Studios Comedy and the German broadcaster ZDFneo.
Bray’s script is partially inspired by real-life housing struggles and the “nightmare scenario” of being trapped in a lease with an ex-partner. The narrative highlights the financial pressures that often supersede personal needs in the current rental market.
The lead cast is supported by a wealth of British comedy talent. John Thomson (Cold Feet) appears as Alan, while Lucy Black takes on the role of Deb. Viewers can also expect to see Jessica Knappett as ‘The Vicar’ throughout the series.
