Activision confirms legacy XP tokens will carry over to Modern Warfare 4

In a significant shift for the Call of Duty franchise, Activision has confirmed that double XP tokens in the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 will only count down during active match time. The change addresses a long-standing grievance within the gaming community regarding tokens being wasted while players are stuck in pre-game lobbies, menus, or searching for matches.

Historically, double XP tokens in the series have operated on a “real-time” basis, meaning the timer would continue to run regardless of whether a player was actually in a firefight or simply waiting for a server to connect. Under the new system, timers will automatically pause during matchmaking and menu navigation, ensuring players receive the full benefit of their earned or purchased boosts.

The update, confirmed ahead of the game’s scheduled release on 23 October 2026, applies not only to new tokens earned within Modern Warfare 4 but also to legacy tokens. Activision has verified that existing tokens from previous titles will carry over into the new game and will benefit from the improved in-match countdown logic.

Player-centric policy shifts

The overhaul of the XP system appears to be part of a broader trend of “player-centric” updates for the franchise. This follows the announcement on 24 September 2026 regarding a new ‘Operator Skin toggle’ for Warzone. Starting with Season 1 of the new title, players will have the option to hide certain non-Modern Warfare 4 cosmetics, replacing them with default character models on their own screen to maintain a specific visual aesthetic.

These adjustments suggest a concerted effort by developers to respond to community feedback that has persisted for several years. While previous entries in the series required players to carefully manage their time to avoid “wasting” tokens, the 2026 system removes that pressure entirely.

Launch details and Early Access

Modern Warfare 4 is set to arrive on a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Notably, the game has also been confirmed as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, marking a major return for the franchise to Nintendo hardware with full feature parity.

For those eager to jump in early, digital pre-orders will provide Campaign Early Access starting from 16 October 2026. This one-week head start allows players to complete the single-player story before the full multiplayer and token systems go live on launch day.

Further details on the various versions of the game and pre-order bonuses can be found via the official Activision Support portal. While the new token system is confirmed for the Modern Warfare 4 ecosystem, it has not yet been clarified if these changes will be retroactively applied to the standalone version of Warzone or previous titles like Black Ops 7.
