UK computer science graduates seeing sharp drop in coding roles as AI impacts job market

National data suggests a significant shift in the UK’s graduate job market, with graduates finding it increasingly difficult to secure traditional entry-level roles as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to automate “grunt work” tasks.

Recent figures reflect a cooling of the graduate market. According to Adzuna data, graduate vacancies across the UK hit a decade low in July 2026, with only 8,383 roles advertised.

The “Digital Paradox”

While demand for high-level technical expertise remains robust, the “entry-level” coder is becoming a rarer sight. Industry experts describe a “Digital and IT paradox” where firms are automating tasks such as basic programming and data analysis—traditionally the first steps on the career ladder for new graduates.

Adapting to an AI-Driven Market

The data does not suggest that technical degrees are becoming obsolete, but rather that the requirements for new hires are changing. Jisc, the UK’s data agency for tertiary education, has noted that while “pure” programming vacancies are becoming more scarce, demand remains high in resilient fields such as cybersecurity and network engineering.

Employers are reportedly shifting their recruitment criteria to favour candidates who are already proficient in using AI tools to enhance their productivity. There is also an increased premium on “human judgement” tasks that AI cannot yet reliably perform, such as complex risk assessment, ethical code review, and cross-departmental strategy.

The findings are based on the latest Graduate Outcomes survey from HESA, which tracked the progress of 350,000 students 15 months after they completed their courses in 2024.

Current students and those considering university applications are being advised to look beyond simple coding skills. Career experts suggest that focusing on “AI-resistant” specialisms—such as systems architecture, data ethics, and complex problem-solving—will be essential to remain competitive in a market where basic technical tasks are increasingly handled by software.
