Capcom has used its Tokyo Game Show 2026 presentation in Chiba, Japan, to unveil the first major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, titled Ascendance. The developer confirmed that the expansion, scheduled for release in 2027, will see the return of the formidable Elder Dragon Teostra and introduce a significant increase in challenge for seasoned players.
The announcement, made on 17 September 2026, details the next chapter of the action-RPG. The reveal of Teostra, a fire-breathing lion-like dragon and a long-standing fan favourite, was a highlight of the showcase, with the monster appearing in a hands-on demo at the trade show.
Master Rank and the Boost Bracer
For many players, the most significant mechanical addition is the introduction of “Master Rank” quests. A staple of previous Monster Hunter expansions, this new difficulty tier provides a tougher challenge than the base game, addressing community feedback regarding the level of difficulty in the initial release.
Capcom also demonstrated a new gameplay mechanic called the “Boost Bracer”. This equipment allows hunters to activate temporary, weapon-specific “Boost Actions,” which empower their attacks for a limited duration. These mechanics were showcased in a hands-on report detailing the fight against Teostra.
Consumer-friendly changes
Alongside the gameplay reveals, Capcom confirmed a major shift in its monetisation strategy for the title. The developer is phasing out the paid “Character Edit Voucher” system, which previously required players to pay a fee to change their character’s physical appearance. Starting with the Version 2.0 update, these changes will be made free of charge, a move that has been widely requested by the player base.
Requirements and availability
The Ascendance expansion will require the base Monster Hunter Wilds game to play.
The expansion is scheduled to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (via Steam), and the recently confirmed Nintendo Switch 2. Capcom has not yet confirmed a specific release date within the 2027 window.
