Miami Beach approves multi-million dollar GTA 6 advertising deal with ‘discreet’ branding limits

The Miami Beach City Commission has narrowly approved a multi-million-dollar marketing partnership with Rockstar Games for the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, though the developer will be required to keep its branding “discreet” to protect the city’s public image.

In a move described as a high-stakes “marriage of convenience,” officials in the Florida city voted 4-3 to approve a campaign that could generate between $3 million and $4 million (£2.3 million to £3.1 million) in municipal revenue.

The narrow 4-3 majority reflects a divide among officials regarding the city’s association with a franchise known for its satirical depiction of urban life, leading to a requirement for a more restrained marketing approach.

Discreet branding

Under the terms of the agreement, the marketing campaign is scheduled to run from 15 October until 31 December 2026. To mitigate concerns about the game’s reputation, the commission has imposed strict limits on how the brand can be displayed.

The advertisements will not feature the full “Grand Theft Auto” title. Instead, branding will be restricted to the Roman numeral “VI” or the words “Vice City”—the fictionalised version of Miami where the game is set.

According to reporting by TweakTown, this compromise allows the city to capture significant corporate funding while maintaining a degree of distance from the game’s more controversial themes.

Timeline for release

The marketing campaign is timed to capitalise on one of the largest entertainment launches of the decade. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled for a worldwide release on 19 November 2026.

While the city of Miami Beach has opted for a subtle approach to its partnership, the deal marks a rare instance of a major municipality negotiating directly with a video game publisher to monetise the very setting the software parodies.
