Channel 4 is set to launch a high-stakes survival series this weekend, placing 14 ordinary people in a simulated “end of the world” scenario. Apocalypse: A Modern Survival Story premieres on Sunday 13 September 2026 at 9pm, following a group of UK and Australian participants as they attempt to survive for 28 days without modern infrastructure.
The series is designed as a social experiment to see how people cope when the comforts of contemporary life are stripped away. According to Channel 4, the contestants were selected to represent a broad cross-section of society.
The Rules of Survival
The participants are divided into two rival groups, known as Eastside and Westside. In a twist to the usual survival format, the two groups are initially unaware of each other’s existence.
For the purposes of the show, the filming location has been transformed into a post-catastrophe landscape where the only resources available must be scavenged or fought for.
One of the early focal points of the series involves a supermarket conflict, where the two groups must navigate their first encounter while competing for limited supplies. The experiment aims to observe whether the groups will choose to collaborate for the greater good or descend into tribalism and competition.
Production and Pedigree
The series is produced by The Garden, the BAFTA-winning production company behind the hit Netflix reality series Squid Game: The Challenge and the long-running documentary series 24 Hours in A&E.
Unlike many reality competitions that offer a significant cash prize, the promotional material for Apocalypse focuses on the psychological and social results of the experiment. The participants must endure the full 28-day duration to see the project through to its conclusion.
Viewers can watch the first episode on Channel 4 this Sunday at 21:00. The series will also be available for streaming via the Channel 4 app following the broadcast.
