WhatsApp

WhatsApp has come a long way from being just an ordinary instant messaging application. Since its acquisition by Meta, the beloved encrypted chat app has undergone significant expansion in terms of features and functionality, mirroring some of the other Meta services like Instagram and Facebook. Despite this, WhatsApp, like any other platform, has taken its fair share of time to learn from its own competition. One such area where WhatsApp seems to be catching up is with the introduction of new features, such as Channels. Today, we are going to explore another groundbreaking feature that WhatsApp has recently rolled out for its mobile and web apps – pinned messages.

So what exactly are pinned messages? Well, pinned messages serve as a convenient way to highlight important conversations and give them the attention they deserve. This feature will be particularly useful in group chats, where users often need to refer back to important information and dates, such as an upcoming gathering or event. WhatsApp itself illustrates this use case to demonstrate the practicality of pinned messages. Additionally, this feature can also be utilized in one-on-one chats, serving a similar purpose.

Good news is that the pinned messages feature appears to already be live and available on Android smartphones and WhatsApp Web, indicating that this is a wider rollout. To guide users through the process of enabling pinned messages, WhatsApp has even created a corresponding FAQ page. This page provides detailed instructions on how to enable pinned messages for each version of WhatsApp, including WhatsApp Web. What’s interesting is that users have the flexibility to determine the duration for which the pinned message will remain visible. WhatsApp offers options such as 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days. And just like you would expect, users can simply tap on the pinned message to access the original text.

However, when it comes to group chats, there are some nuances to consider regarding permissions. WhatsApp explains that on Android, group admins can allow members to pin messages by enabling the “Edit group settings” toggle. For group admins using WhatsApp Web and desktop, they will need to navigate to the “Edit group info” page within Group settings and choose between “All members” or “Only admins” to enable message pinning for members. This ensures that pinning messages remains an organized and controlled process within group chats.

Now, it’s important to note that there is one limitation to the new implementation – users can only pin one message at a time. If you try to pin another message, WhatsApp will prompt you that it will replace the original pinned message. However, according to WABetaInfo’s reporting, this limitation might soon change. They have discovered evidence that the beta version of WhatsApp for Android (version 2.23.26.9) is testing the ability to pin multiple messages. If this feature is introduced, users will be able to easily navigate between multiple pinned messages from the top of the screen, which adds an extra layer of convenience. However, whether this new functionality will come with a limit on the number of messages that can be pinned simultaneously remains uncertain.

Surprisingly, even though WhatsApp already allows users to pin up to three full conversations at the top of the Chats tab, the ability to pin individual messages was conspicuously absent until now. Platforms like Telegram and Discord have supported message pinning for as long as we can remember, making it a mystery as to why it took WhatsApp this long to implement such a fundamental feature.

Interestingly, whispers of this feature were first heard in a beta version of WhatsApp Business for Android earlier this year. It took until October for it to gradually appear on WhatsApp beta for Android. And now, with this latest rollout across all versions of WhatsApp, message pinning has officially become a part of the comprehensive WhatsApp experience, albeit a few years later than expected.

In conclusion, the introduction of pinned messages on WhatsApp is a significant step forward in enhancing the user experience and keeping important conversations accessible at all times. Whether you’re using WhatsApp for personal or business purposes, this feature will undoubtedly prove to be beneficial. So, take advantage of the pinned messages feature and ensure that your most critical chats and information always have their rightful place in the spotlight.
