Bognor-based Nyetimber Pirates were last night crowned champions the West Sussex County Football League thanks to a point from a 1-1 draw with title rivals Lavant at Pagham’s Nyetimber Lane.

The Looters fell behind but Del Chester levelled to earn the home side a vital point and means that they couldn’t caught by the visitors, who sit in second spot.

The Pirates’ official Twitter feed reflected on the triumph and just how far the club has come since being formed as a Sunday side.

Tweets read: “Hated by many envied by all. It’s finally sinking in what we have acheived this season. We only formed a few years ago and we were tipped by many to not last one season.”

And the Pirates’ achievements have not got united by football fans in the area, who have dished out congratulations on the social media feed.

Adam Goldring, a staunch follower of Bognor Regis Town and a supporter of football in the area, tweeted: “Congratulations to all the lads Nyetimber Pirates. Fantastic achievement on how far that club has come since the Sunday league days.”
