A touching look back at the late Dave Bolland’s days as football referee

Hundreds of mourners will pay their respects and last farewells to much-loved David Bolland at his funeral tomorrow.

And on the eve of the funeral, we have uncovered an interview Dave gave to a Sussex football magazine, which provides a touching reminder just how much of a “good egg” he was.

In the article, Dave displayed in bundles the joy of life, sense of humour and kindness which made so many people consider the then teacher and part-time referee a friend and fantastic family man.

We replicate the article, which appeared in Sussex Soccer, here; it is from March 1998.

Ahead of Tuesday’s funeral, David’s daughter Jenny asked that we pass on the following:

She said:

“For those planning to come we would prefer no flowers.”

“But if you would like to make a donation in Dad’s memory to one of his charities (Macmillan or St Wilfred’s Hospice) you can do this on the day or online at www.reynoldsfuneralservices.co.uk/funeralsearch and searching for David Bolland. Thank you.”
