Bigger and better! Have your say on whether Bognor schools should be expanded…

People are being asked for their views on the proposed expansion of two schools in Bognor Regis —  St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Felpham Community College

West Sussex County Council are undertaking the consultation due to the demand on school places across the county gradually increasing in recent years — and the numbers are predicted to rise further in the future.

The admissions and school planning team has been working closely with headteachers to regularly review the current and future provision but now they are asking for feedback from parents, residents and school staff.

Richard Burrett, council cabinet member for education and skills, hopes the consultation will determine whether there is support to expand the three schools.

He said: “We’re hoping the consultation will determine whether there is support to expand these schools. It’s crucial that members of the public raise any concerns, and give advice or views on how this might be implemented. This way, should the proposed plans go ahead, we can ensure that we carry out the changes in the best possible way and with residents’ opinions in the forefront of our minds.”

Changes in demography reflect national trends with more births and larger households in some areas and more growth beginning to affect secondary schools because of recent growth in primary numbers. Plans are being developed for secondary school places across the county.

Following the end of the consultation a decision will be made on whether to publish statutory notices for a further four week representation period in the New Year. A final decision on the proposed changes is expected to be made in the middle of February 2018.

The consultation will run until Tuesday 28 November 2017. The following drop-in sessions are being held for people who would like to discuss the proposals in person:

Tuesday 7 November from 2.50pm to 6pm at Felpham Community College, Felpham Way, Felpham, Bognor Regis, PO22 8EL

Wednesday 8 November from 3.30pm to 6.30pm at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Glamis Street, Bognor Regis, PO21 1DJ
